It is with immense sadness that Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary announces the passing of Kuna, the very first wolfdog and inspiration behind the Sanctuary. Kuna passed away peacefully on September 17th, 2024, at the age of 15 and a half.

Kuna’s journey began as a young pup, with founder, Georgina De Caigny, and from that single bond grew the idea for what would become Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary. Kuna inspired the creation of a safe haven for countless wolfdogs in need, many of whom would have had nowhere else to go.

Without Kuna, the Sanctuary simply would not exist. Her influence extended far beyond her role as the first wolfdog ofYamnuska—she was its heart. Kuna helped educate visitors, build awareness, and connect people to the mission of protecting and rescuing wolfdogs. Her gentle, captivating nature left a lasting impression on everyone she met.

Though her passing marks the end of an era, Kuna’s legacy will live on through the continued work of Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary. The 58 wolfdogs currently calling the Sanctuary home are a direct testament to the impact she had. Through each of them, and in the lives of future rescues, Kuna’s spirit will remain a guiding force in the Sanctuary’s mission.

Those looking to do something in honour of Kuna are invited to join the Kuna Kummunity, a monthly donor program that directly supports the Sanctuary’s mission of rescuing and caring for wolfdogs, and continuing on Kuna’s legacy.
