We are currently looking to fill a seasonal Tour Guide/Animal Care Attendant here at the Sanctuary! We are looking for a dedicated individual that loves wolves and wolfdogs and is passionate about raising awareness and educating the public about these misunderstood animals. This is a great opportunity to be immersed in everything wolf and wolfdog and support our efforts of providing wolfdogs with a safe and happy home!

Seasonal Tour Guide /Animal Care Attendant

Spring 2019- October 31, 2019

Thursday to Monday (must be able to work holidays)

Tasks include:

  1. Daily Wolfdog Care
  2. Performing Sanctuary Tours
  3. Facility Maintenance

Tour Guide Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Greet all guests promptly at scheduled tour times
  • Outline the tour and procedures before beginning
  • Determine if any guests have physical restrictions that should be considered
  • Clearly and articulately provide information to guests in an engaging manner
  • Answer any questions that the guests have
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of our facility and related topics
  • Remain calm, friendly, and enthusiastic at all times
  • Deescalate any tension with difficult guests
  • Escort guests through the tour, taking breaks as needed
  • Keep the tour on schedule while still being considerate to guests
  • Know all safety and security protocols, should they be needed
  • Manage animals accordingly to ensure visitors have a great experience while ensuring the safety of animals and visitors

Animal Care Attendant Duties and Responsibilities

Feed and Groom Animals

  • Prepare appropriate diets for the animals in our care, as well as create and adhere to feeding schedules
  • Ordering food supplies may be part of this task as well
  • Bathing and general grooming when deemed necessary

Clean and Maintain Animal Areas

  • Cleaning of enclosures and any other spaces the animals spend time in, such as training areas or kennels
  • Identifying any areas in the Sanctuary that may need maintenance due to wear, damage or weather
  • Ensuring the Sanctuary and all its enclosures are kept safe at all times and locked when necessary

Observe and Interact with Animals

  • Observing animals and their daily behaviours and identify when a particular animal appears unwell or injured
  • Interact with the animals in our care, often providing toys and other stimuli, ensuring they receive adequate exercise and attention

Train and Handle Animals

  • Train animals, either for educational programs and activities or for preparing the animals for medical and feeding procedures
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements and Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree is a plus
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers’ License
  • Significant work experience in customer service preferred
  • Highly motivated self-starter who takes initiative with minimal supervision
  • Experience with public speaking
  • Ability to memorize and recite facts clearly and accurately
  • Fluent in English; bilingual a plus
  • Exceptional verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Basic computer skills, including email and word processing
  • Enthusiastic, engaging, and informative way of speaking
  • Ability to remain calm and collected when dealing with difficult guests
  • Passion for learning and willingness to continue to acquire relevant knowledge
  • Demonstrable interest in all aspects of animal welfare
  • Previous kennel or animal care experience will be considered an asset
  • Position is physically demanding and includes heavy lifting, pushing and pulling which requires an individual with the ability to maintain a level of fitness and endurance to fulfill the required duties
  • Extensive understanding of wolf, dog and wolfdog behavior
  • Knowledge of animal handling and care techniques
  • Be able to exercise judgment, be detailed and observant, and be able to communicate well with coworkers and the public
